Not all people who weight train do so for the same reason.  Some are like bodybuilders who are using weight lifting movements to train their muscles to get bigger.  Others are like powerlifters and Olympic weight lifters who are using their muscles to get stronger in weight lifting movements.  Powerlifters strive to get better in barbell exercises such as the Squat, the Deadlift, and the Bench Press, Olymplic weight lifters put in their efforts to excel in the Snatch and Clean and Jerk lifts.  Bodybuilders tend to be more interested in developing their physiques so they are more into extreme muscular contractions and fat loss whereas a powerlifter is more concerned about strength training.

It takes a little bit of knowledge about kinesiology to understand weight training exercises.  Kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of human body movements.  In order to make your quadriceps stronger, you have to know which exercises work the front muscles of your thighs.  If you want to know how to develop your biceps, trapezius, shoulders and abdominal muscles, you’ll need to know the exercises for them as well.  There are certain large compound exercises known as The Big Five that signal muscle growth to your central nervous system.  There are also major variants of those large compound movements.
